New poll: As AI changes work, what skills will matter most?

Difficult emotions: a guide to freedom

Artificial intelligence is transforming the workplace faster than almost anyone predicted. It can draft reports, analyse vast amounts of data, automate repetitive tasks, and even generate creative ideas in seconds.

As AI becomes increasingly capable, one question matters more than ever:

Which human skills will matter most?

To explore this, HappierMe conducted a LinkedIn poll with 1,695 professionals across industries.

The results were revealing:
  • 46% said Human connection is the most important skill.
  • 23% chose sound judgment.
  • 17% selected emotional resilience.
  • 13% voted for self-awareness.

The results reveal something important. As machines become better at performing tasks, the skills that create trust, wisdom, adaptability, and meaningful relationships become increasingly valuable. AI may change what we do. Human skills will increasingly determine how well we do it.

Why Human skills matter more than ever

AI is transforming the workplace, but it cannot replace the trust we build with colleagues, the empathy we show during difficult conversations, or the wisdom required to make complex decisions.

Technology can process information.

People create meaning.

The future of work will not belong to those who simply know how to use A, it will belong to those who know how to combine technology with emotional intelligence, good judgment, and strong relationships.

# 1. Human connection builds trust

Nearly half of respondents chose human connection as the most important workplace skill.

Whether you’re leading a team, teaching students, supporting patients, or serving customers, meaningful relationships remain at the heart of great work.

People are more likely to collaborate, innovate, and perform well when they feel understood and valued.

Explore the Relationships and Communication modules in the HappierMe app to strengthen these essential skills.

# 2. Sound judgment cannot be automated

AI can generate recommendations, but it cannot fully understand context, values, ethics, or the human impact of a decision.

Good judgment is not simply choosing the most likely answer. It often involves balancing competing priorities, recognising ethical dilemmas, and understanding the consequences of decisions for real people.

It also requires recognising when our assumptions, fears, or biases may be influencing the choices we make.

# 3. Emotional resilience helps us adapt

Work is changing faster than ever.

New technologies, shifting roles, and constant learning can all create stress and anxiety.

Emotional resilience is not the absence of stress. It is the ability to recover, adapt, and continue making thoughtful decisions even when circumstances are uncertain.

This ability helps people recover from setbacks, stay motivated, and continue performing under pressure.

Explore the Stress, Anxiety, and Reactive Mind modules in the HappierMe app to build emotional resilience.

# 4. Self-awareness is the foundation of growth

Although self-awareness received the fewest votes, it may be the most foundational skill of all. It sits beneath every other human capability. The more we understand our own thinking, emotions, habits, and conditioning, the easier it becomes to build strong relationships, exercise good judgment, and respond calmly under pressure.

Without self-awareness, we often react automatically without understanding why.

With it, we gain the freedom to respond more thoughtfully.

Human skills can be learned

Technology processes information. Humans create meaning, build trust, inspire others, and make decisions that reflect values rather than algorithms.

They are not fixed personality traits, they can be developed through reflection, practice, and greater self-understanding.

As AI continues to reshape the workplace, organisations that invest in emotional intelligence and mental wellbeing will be better equipped to build resilient teams, stronger leaders, and healthier workplace cultures.
